President Obama has signaled to the world that his policy of “engagement,” which grows out of his administration’s commitment to “mutual respect,” extends to despotisms that perpetrate genocide. Obama is determined to begin negotiations with the Sudan even though its President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is wanted for crimes against humanity; for atrocities committed in Darfur. To date, at least 300,000 souls have perished at the order of al-Bashir’s Islamic regime. Obama, therefore, not only snubs decency but the United Nation’s International Criminal Court. The president apparently holds himself above his cherished international community.
“If the government of Sudan acts to improve the situation on the ground and to advance peace, there will be incentives; if it does not, then there will be increased pressure imposed by the United States and the international community,” said Obama in a statement. Al-Bashir has nothing to lose at this point. As the New York Times pointed out, “The 2.7 million Darfuris in camps for the displaced live wretched lives but are no longer being killed in large numbers, if only because the government’s campaign of terror has largely achieved its objectives.” In essence, Obama's policy of "engagement" with the Sudan makes the United States an accessory, after the fact, to Islamic mass murder.
