Alice Sunshine, the aptly named spokeswoman for the California Faculty Association, tried to put a good face on a bad situation. “We try to steer them [students] into protests that express how to make things better, but I think some of the students are really angry.” That is putting it mildly. According to news reports, 40 to 70 protesters descended on the home of Robert Birgeneau, chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, in the wee small hours last Friday morning. Windows were smashed, planters overturned and decorative garden orbs smashed. Some of the rioters hurled lit torches at police responding to the disturbance. Police managed to nab only eight suspects. Among those arrested, just two attended UC Berkeley. One rioter was age 41, while another came by way of Brooklyn, New York. Of course, this was in response to California’s 32% increase in undergraduate student fees and the 20% budget cut to the state’s university system. The violence is likely to become a trend as the bitter cup of economic reality gets passed among the nation’s pampered university types.

“California will not tolerate any type of terrorism against any leaders, including educators,” insisted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. UC system President Mark Yudof condemned the attack, saying the riot went “far beyond the boundaries of public dissent.”

Last April, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano released a an assessment report warning of a possible increase in rightwing extremism:

“…The consequences of a prolonged economic downturn – including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability to obtain credit – could create a fertile recruiting environment for rightwing extremists and even result in confrontations between such groups and government authorities...

“Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to rightwing extremists. DHS is concerned that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities.”

While Napolitano was gearing the Homeland Security Department to fight the phantom rightwing menace, the economic downturn created “a fertile recruiting environment” for sniveling college students and union knuckle draggers. It isn’t gun legislation, the New World Order or unchecked illegal immigration that animates this odd brand of terrorist. It is their something-for-nothing mindset that fuels the anger when confronted by the horrible reality that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Enter the entitlement terrorist.
