It wasn’t quite “The Day of the Jackal,” but it appears someone tried to off Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The dear leader, however, escaped unharmed. This must have come as a great relief to President Obama, still hoping against hope that some day he’ll meet face-to-face with Iran’s strongman without preconditions and in a spirit of mutual respect.

Iran’s government, fearful spontaneous street celebrations would erupt throughout the country, issued a quick press release denying any attempt was made on their leaders life. Instead, the government claims the noise that sent Ahmadinejad’s security team checking their leader for exit wounds, was just the popping of a firecracker.

The government statement claims the “firecracker” was set off by a “young man who wanted to express his enthusiasm.” Then, oddly, it goes on to say smoke spread over the area of the president’s motorcade and that several people were arrested.

Either someone tried to kill Ahmadinejad or Iran has the Islamic world’s strictest anti-fireworks laws.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “The president's popularity has been strained by high unemployment” and “a bad economy.”

Gee, which president are they talking about?
