“You lie,” yelled Rep. Joe Wilson at President Obama during his national photo-op pushing his unpopular health care plan. But there are those who fear Obama’s pledge to exclude 12 million illegal aliens from access to his health care death panels may be true. The Rev. Luis Cortéz, president of the Hispanic Esperanza network, told the Reuters News Service:
All we can do at this point is look at each local election, one by one, and punish those individuals-regardless of their party-who deny rights to legal immigrants and children, as well as the poorest in our nation, the undocumented.
That’s not a veiled threat. When Republican congressman Robert K. Dornan lost his House seat to his Democratic challenger Loretta Sanchez in 1996, the Orange County Republican challenged the victorious Democrat before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. His charge? That Sanchez won the election on votes cast by illegal aliens. The House committee rejected Dornan’s challenge sighting the fact that Sanchez’s 979-vote victory contained of only 624 illegal votes - not enough in their view to challenge Sanchez’s legitimacy to sit in congress. That’s why Rep. Joe Wilson’s charge that Obama lied is so credible. It’s difficult to believe Obama would alienate a powerful and important, if illegal, Democratic Party voting block.
Now, Obama needs to mend political fences with illegals before, in their anger, they join the ranks of the Tea Party. Don’t laugh, politics makes for strange bedfellows.
