By Mr. Curmudgeon
“We Democrats are going to address this issue after the election when we take control of the congress,” Nancy Pelosi said back in 2006. “We will return to the 60% to 80% tax rates on the rich and we will be able to take at least 30% of all current lower Federal Income Tax taxpayers off the roles and increase government income substantially. We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income in our country and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest.”
While Madam Speaker’s words still reverberate in your skull, let’s segway to a recently reported New York Times story. Three men extradited from West Africa were charged in Federal court with conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism and with providing material support to terrorist groups. Al Qaeda and Columbia’s Marxist rebel group Fuezas Armadas Revolucionarieas de Colombia (FARC) run a sophisticated drug smuggling operation that, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), moves tons of cocaine through the West African desert wastes and into Europe. According to the New York Times, one of the defendants, Oumar Issa, Harouna Touré, “supported Al Qaeda with gasoline and food and ‘collects taxes from many rich Malian people throughout the region on Al Qaeda’s behalf…he ‘commented that without him’ Al Qaeda ‘could not eat.’” Who would have thought Al Qaeda's Mr. Touré and Speaker Pelosi would have so much in common? Both represent a radical worldview espoused by their respective organizations. Both believe so firmly in their holy cause they insist – I mean really insist – the well-healed investor class pay for it. And both can’t wait to bring the rest of the world into the fold – by whatever means necessary.
Of course, Nancy and her Democrats haven’t yet resorted to drug running. But then again, we don’t really know what’s in the final health care bill. And if Republican Scott Brown wins Teddy “Chappaquiddick” Kennedy’s senate seat in the Massachusetts special election, Democrats may don suicide vests.
