You have to hand it to some Congressional Democrats. They are taking totalitarianism on the road to test on the crowds back home. Unfortunately, some members of the audience are jealous of their liberty and can argue in its defense. Rep. Fortney “Pete” Stark (D-CA) found out at a recent town hall meeting with constituents in the San Francisco Bay Area.
A female constituent asked a good question about ObamaCare:
Woman: “How can legislation, such as this, be Constitutional when it seems to be in direct conflict with the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery?
“If this legislation is Constitutional, what limitations are there on the federal government’s ability to tell us how to run our private lives?”
Rep. Stark: “I think that there are very few Constitutional limits that would prevent the federal government from rules that could affect your private life. Now, the basis for that would be…how does it affect other people.”
(Crowd begins to stir and grumble)
Woman: “Sir, the Constitution specifically enumerates certain powers to the federal government and leaves all other authority to the states. So, the Constitution is very limited in what it can do, sir. And it specifically prohibits slavery. And when you tell somebody you have a right to get a service from another, that’s essentially saying, you get to make that person do something for you. And, sir, that is a form of slavery. So, my question is: how can this law be Constitutional? But more importantly than that, if they [the federal government] can do this, what can’t they?”
Rep. Stark: “The federal government can, yes, do most anything in this country…”
(Crowd boos)
Woman: “You, sir, and people who think like you, are destroying this nation.”
Rep. Stark: “I’m sure glad that you’re here to save it. It makes me feel very comfortable.”
Back when ObamaCare was still being hotly debated in Congress, Rep. Phil Hare (D-Ill) told a constituent (on video no less), “I don’t worry about the Constitution on this, to be honest.”
When Nancy Pelosi was asked about the Constitutionality of ObamaCare, she responded, “Are you serious? Are you serious?
“To each according to his need. From each according to his ability” said the sign near the slippery slope to the gulag and the death camps.
What Constitution? What inalienable rights? Are you serious? Are you serious?
Don’t worry. Bad things can’t happen here. This is America, after all. Wait a second…I forgot. We’re undergoing “transformative change.” That’s why Rep. Stark’s government can make “rules that could affect your private life” and can “do most anything in this country.” Stark smiles with satisfied confidence that nothing can undo it. He may be right.
2008 was a “game changer” for America. And in this game, we’re the losers.
